02/17/2007 - Pacific Palisades, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Padraig Harrington carded a three- under 68 Friday and Phil Mickelson posted a six-under 65 to share the lead near the end of the second round at the Nissan Open.
Harrington and Mickelson stand at 11-under-par 131. Charles Howell III, already a two-time runner-up this season, is alone in third at eight-under 134 after a 65 at Riviera Country Club.
Australian Robert Allenby fired a five-under 66 to move into a share of fourth place at seven-under 135. He was joined there by Sergio Garcia (68), David Howell (68) and Pat Perez (69).
The first round was completed early Friday, but one player, George McNeill, remained on the course Friday evening without finishing his second round. McNeill will finish Saturday morning before round three starts at 11:00 a.m. (et).
Harrington started on the back nine at Riviera on Friday and was up and down throughout. He bogeyed the 10th, but got that stroke right back with a birdie on 11.
The Irishman traded a bogey for a birdie from the 13th and again from the 15th. Harrington moved to minus-nine with a birdie at the par-five 17th.
The two-time winner on the PGA Tour two-putted for birdie on the par-five first. He moved to minus-11 with a 10-foot birdie putt at the par-three sixth. Harrington parred the final three holes to end there.
"It's always hard to follow up a round of 63," Harrington stated. "Anything in the 60s was really the goal today. I knew going out there I would be a little bit erratic. It's still a very early season for me. I'm still making mental errors here and there, so I put up with that. And I made some birdies to counteract some of the bogeys which was very nice."
Mickelson opened his round with a birdie on the first. After four straight pars, the 36-year-old birdied the sixth to move to minus-seven.
He parred the following four holes before catching fire. Mickelson birdied the par-five 11th before converting back-to-back birdies from the 13th, both from inside six feet.
Mickelson, who is commuting via airplane from his home near San Diego this week, stumbled to a bogey on the par-three 16th. He jumped into a share of the lead with an eagle at the 17th.
"It was important to get at least birdie the 17th. I thought it was a birdie hole," said Mickelson. "I was just trying to get down there by the green in two, just left of the pin somewhere. I hit a good tee shot that allowed me to go at the green. I just flushed [my second shot] -- it just came off perfect and ended up in the middle of the green and I made the putt."
Before his round, Mickelson had an interesting warm-up session. He hit balls at the Callaway test center before flying down to the tournament site.
"I didn't tee off until 12:40," Mickelson said. "The test center is a minute and a half from the airport. It is right by the runway, it couldn't be easier."
Howell got his round going with birdies on 11 and 12. He ran off four consecutive birdies from the 17th to get to minus-eight. However, Howell parred the final seven holes to end alone in third.
World No. 2 Jim Furyk posted a one-under 70 Friday. He shares eighth place at five-under 137 with Aaron Baddeley, former PGA champion Rich Beem, Johnson Wagner, Rocco Mediate and Ernie Els.
Defending champion Rory Sabbatini shot 70 and is tied for 19th place after two rounds at minus-three.
The cut line will fall at two-over 144 regardless of what McNeill does. McNeill is looking at about a 40-foot birdie putt. He could three putt and still make the cut. As of now, 79 players will advance to the final two rounds.

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.
Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.
Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.
Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.
All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.
A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.
Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.
Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds
With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.
That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.
Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.
After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.
The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
